This service is offered to people and organisations that want to evaluate the fire risk of existing or planned building constructions and transport media in relation to fire. It also helps to find answers in those cases where fires caused loss of life, major financial losses or endangered people and/or organisations.
Previous projects covered aspects of fire safety in nuclear power plants, fire safety in car parks, fire safety in domestic houses, etc. as well as fire scene investigations in Belgium and abroad (Switel,‘De Punt’, Schiphol, ...).
Fire involves the interaction of complex physical and chemical phenomena that are continuously changing over time. Fire investigation requires a good understanding of the behaviour of materials, systems and constructions in a fire together with a good knowledge of the ventilation conditions and the spreading of hot fire effluents.
To evaluate the ‘fire behaviour’ WFRGENT NV has ample test facilities to evaluate the Reaction to Fire of materials and systems and to test the Resistance to fire of constructions to a wide variety of both national and international standards. It also has the possibility to realise non-standardised full scale experiments on any object ranging from electronic components up to 1000 m² building constructions. This data is often combined with the outcome of numerical simulations in order to reduce the number of testing or to extrapolate test results.
For the numerical simulations, WFRGENT NV makes use both of packages developed in-house as well as external software packages. For the simulation of spread of smoke and hot gases, WFRGENT NV utilises purposely built Computational Fluid Dynamics packages. For very complex problems, WFRGENT NV – as a spin-off organisation of University Ghent – works together with specialists of University Ghent and the Von Karman Institute.
